Snowledge A NEW APP CREATED BY AND FOR SKIERS.
Freeride World Qualifier athlete and former collegiate ski racer Eric Lee O’Brien thinks you need to know more. More about how much vert you’ve chalked up today, more about really how fast you’ve skied, more about how many runs you’ve lapped and more weather, conditions and other info, like – perhaps more importantly – where to find the powder.
“We saw an opportunity to build one app that gives you the local mountain knowledge you need to plan your day, and lets you connect with your friends, track your runs, and share your best content with a community of skiers and riders,” says O’Brien. “It was especially important to us that the app used locally-based knowledge, and gave its users an opportunity to connect with others wherever they visited—our aim was to make it feel like you’re skiing at your home mountain, even when you’re at a new resort.”
The app has a social element with photo and video sharing and a customized personal profile. That stuff is fine and dandy, but it’s probably not going to replace Instagram or Facebook for most users.
But that doesn’t matter, because best part of the app is the geeky functionality that it gives users: the ability to use GPS to capture data on how many runs skied, total vertical feet, and top speed, along with current elevation and weather conditions.
These latter features are coupled with mountain info, including detailed maps, with lifts and runs. Right now over 375 North American ski areas are part of the ecosystem, meaning that unless you’re in Europe, you’re probably covered, and have the information at your fingertips to maximize your day. And that’s a good thing.
